Taking inspiration from our closets and the latest in Italian high fashion, Barbara Hawthorn Interiors, Ltd. found metallic, sparkle, and shine to be a major influence not only today but also throughout the decades. Inspired by this year’s latest Prada steel and crystal stilettos (featured in August, 2007 DC Modern Luxury)  and a classic decades old Prada metallic sequin evening bag – both from Barbara’s own collection,  the design team was instantly drawn to the Snaidero and Fendi Casa showrooms.

From the timeless metallic Pinnafarina Ferrari finish on Snaidero’s top of the line Ola cabinetry to the high fashion “bling” and breathtaking elegance of Fendi Casa’s Murano glass chandelier and lighting, silver metallic fabrics, and glossy embossed leathers; the Metallic, Sparkle, and Shine Kitchen and Garden began to take shape.

Adding functional and opulent metallic finishes for the tile flooring and stainless steel chair rail give that additional sparkle.  In the serene meditation garden you will find a “Relax!” sculpture man and a magnificent light wall that inspires original and whimsical thoughts.  The durability of the metallic floor and the use of an indoor/outdoor bench on the garden side and the Fendi outdoor Oasi chair and table in the kitchen are just a part of the functional opulence that BHI Ltd. puts into all of their rooms.  The innovative EcoSmart fireplace is like a freestanding piece of furniture designed with a flue less burner and a double sided opening. With a glass panel, this unit offers the ultimate flexibility to move the fire anywhere that suits your living environment. With the suspended TV and the 2 sided fireplace; crossing the line from the indoors to the outdoors just got a little easier…

In cooperation with The Washington Design Center, Barbara Hawthorn Interiors Ltd. is creating a space that will take fashion to the next level in the home – a kitchen and garden area that is functional glamour and fantasy for everyday life.

Barbara Hawthorn, Barbara Hawthorn Interiors

Barbara Hawthorn has over 25 years experience in interior design, project management, and urban planning.  In 1984, she established her namesake firm, Barbara Hawthorn Interiors, Ltd. specializing in "timeless, trend-resistant design” exemplified by “functional opulence”.  Her original designs mix modern, comfortable furnishings with fine art and antiques enhanced by an exceptional use of lighting.  From her office in McLean VA, she and her team direct a wide range of projects including comprehensive new construction and renovations from residential to commercial.  Client commissions include:  The design and specification for a new luxury home integrating “green” environmental construction and furnishings; Residences and vacation homes from 8,000-18,000 square feet throughout the US and internationally.  Commercial projects include:  Restaurants, boutiques, and the offices of prominent attorneys, lobbyists, doctors and venture capitalists.

Ms. Hawthorn's work has appeared on Home & Garden Television (HGTV), in national newspapers and magazines, and in multiple show houses including those of the National Symphony Orchestra where she served on their Designer Advisor Board. She has been named as one of Washington’s best designers in Washingtonian magazine.

During her childhood, Ms. Hawthorn grew up in New York, Los Angeles, London and Paris.  Frequent travels among the great European cities developed her appreciation for architecture and the decorative arts. As a young adult, she sought out opportunities to apply and refine her aesthetic sensibilities by apprenticing in her father's engineering firm, graduating from the Fieldston School, studying art and antiques in London and Paris, and learning about lighting from set designers at The Metropolitan Opera.

In 1971, Ms. Hawthorn graduated Vassar College, Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After Vassar, she was a recipient of the prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship, and earned a Masters of Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974.

Her volunteer activities include teaching art, color theory, and lighting design to students and professionals. She is a member of the Women’s Leadership Group for The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington.  With her leadership, Barbara and her team at Barbara Hawthorn Interiors Ltd. have created rooms that range from the traditional to modern to incredibly whimsical.
